I started looking for a home in Costa Rica in October 2010. I was spending countless hours on the internet hunting for that dream-house amidst thousands of ads listed by hundreds of "realtors" (and I use that term loosely). If you have made any calls yourself inquiring about property or houses you know that EVERYONE in Costa Rica is a "realtor". I talked to SO MANY "realtors" but most of them were just people that knew of houses for sale and really had very limited knowledge about the legal transfer of property, or how to check for liens, etc. During this first two-week-straight phone call marathon (the duration of my trip to CR) I encountered a very nice realtor named Nikita Mohammed from Coldwell Banker. It turned out that it was not what I was looking for and we wished each-other luck and went our seperate ways since I was focusing my search quite a bit farther North than her normal service area.
Over the next few months I made several trips back to CR and encountered difficulty after difficulty. The first house I found and that I really liked was all set to be purchased. Due to some bad representation and poor investigation into the terms, the deal fell through. A couple months later I found another place that sounded great but when I traveled to CR to look at it, I discovered it was basically a cliff. I would have needed mountain climbing gear to walk to the bottom of the property. Seriously, it dropped approximately 130 meters from the top to the bottom and it was only a one-acre parcel.
Over the months from when I first started looking up to this point, Nikita would check in and see how my search was going. After that second failed attempt at buying a house I realized I needed sole-representation from a qualified professional. I asked Nikita for her help even though I was looking out of her normal area. She agreed and we went to work. WOW! What a difference a qualified individual can make. Nikita was on top of everything right from the beginning. She showed me some really nice options and listened to my likes and dislikes about them all. There was one I really liked that seemed like a pretty good deal but when Nikita did her homework she found it had a titile-issue. I could have got screwed horribly but she stopped that from happening. After lots of searching we found the perfect house. The terms changed at the last minute and I thought I was going to get screwed again. Things werelooking pretty grim. Nikita made the deal work even after it seemed like it wasn't going to. She understood how much I liked it and made it happen. There is NO WAY I could have made this move without her help. Even after the deal was made she has been a tremendous help. I would have given up on moving to Costa Rica had it not been for her help and expertise. Do not waste time and incur the headaches that I did. Get the right representaion on your search and know that your interests are covered.
