How to Find a Good Real Estate Agent In Costa Rica

 

Finding real estate in Costa Rica may be difficult for you, especially if you’re not familiar with the area. There are real estate agents here, but you may have to go through a fine tooth comb to find the right one. There are some honest real estate agents in Costa Rica that are trustworthy. On the other hand, there are some that pose as agents and will try to rip you off.

You can look for a real estate agent over the internet, but you should eventually try to make a trip to Costa Rica to meet with them. When you find one that you think can suit your needs, plan to come and start looking for real estate in Costa Rica.

Remember, when you come to Costa Rica, an ethical and trustworthy real estate agent is of utmost importance. Here are some things you should know about real estate agents in Costa Rica:

 
  • People that call themselves real estate agents in Costa Rica should be able to work legally in the country. Ask them for their Permanent Residency Card to prove they’re in Costa Rica legally. If they don’t have it, don’t give them the time of day.

  • Real estate agents in Costa Rica are not required to go to school for any training. They also do not have to be licensed in order to sell real estate. So in essence, that means anyone from off the street can say there are a real estate agent.

  • Costa Rica does not have a MLS (Multiple Listing Service). It has been difficult to form one because there are real estate agents in Costa Rica that are not interested in reporting their sales to someone else.

  • Because there is not an MLS in Costa Rica, you stand the chance of paying more than what you should for real estate. An ethical and trustworthy real estate agent in Costa Rica will not overcharge you for property you’re looking purchase.

  • A good idea would be for you to live in Costa Rica for about a year. That way, you will be able to get an idea of what the country is like. You will also get a chance to see what real estate properties interest you. When you do sign up with a real estate agent in Costa Rica, they won’t be able to pull the wool over your head.

  • In order to complete the real estate purchase, you must have an attorney to make sure that everything goes as planned.


It’s important to be educated in the real estate process so that you’ll know how to avoid the pitfalls of losing your money.
