HISTORY
The Municipality of Garabito, founded in 1899, is named for the Indian Chief who fought heroically against Spanish Conquistadores in the 1500’s. His war tactics were sophisticated and his kingdom was the largest controlled area in Costa Rica at that time, stretching from Cartago in the Central Valley, to its seat of power in the mountains of Carara.

Comprising 316 square kilometers, Garabito is home to over 20,000 permanent residents, with a floating population of approximately 40,000. The year-round population in the Garabito region has doubled in the last five years bringing with it a plethora of new businesses and modern services, as well as private learning institutions catering to adults and children alike.
