Getting a Residency in Costa Rica

Costa Rica is a country that draws its visitors in like a wildly beautiful magnet and the strongest pull seems to be in Jaco Beach. People who have visited once want to come back again and some, to stay. That’s what happened to me.

If you are planning to take up a permanent or semi-permanent residence in a Jaco Beach Condo in Costa Rica, the first point of action would be to apply for a residency. In applying for a residency in Costa Rica, there are a number of categories or regimes under which you may qualify. Whichever the category, there are some basic documents you would have to produce.

Your birth certificate is a mandatory document to be submitted. This includes the birth certificates of any dependents you might have. It must be issued by the appropriate authorities at the place of birth and must also be taken to the Costa Rican Consulate nearest to the place of issue. Your birth certificate should have the names of both your parents.

Another important document is a clean National Criminal Record Certificate issued by the relevant authority in the country where you have lived in the last ten years before your application. If you are a citizen or resident of the U.S., an FBI clearance might be a good idea. When you obtain the criminal record certificate, you need to use it for the application as soon as possible because it will only be valid for six months from the date of issue. You will need to get it authenticated by the Costa Rican Consulate closest to the place where the criminal record certificate was issued. This certificate is also important for any dependents you might have who are 15 years or older.

If you are married and intend to include your spouse in the application, you will need to include your marriage certificate. If it is issued outside of Costa Rica, you will need to have the certificate authenticated by the Costa Rican Consulate nearest to the place of issue. However, if your marriage was registered in Costa Rica, there won’t be any need for the Consulate to authenticate the certificate.

You need to be aware that the Costa Rican Police Archives will take your fingerprints and pass it on to INTERPOL for a background check. This particular requirement is compulsory for all applications regardless of the category or regime under which you are applying.

Any document which was obtained outside Costa Rica will have to be authenticated by the Costa Rican Consulate nearest to the place it was issued. There will be legal stamps (fees) charged on these. The documents will also need to be translated to Spanish by an official translator if they are in a different language.

Each category has additional requirements you will need to meet, like your financial liquidity for instance. If you are applying under the Financially Sound Immigrant Residency for instance, an accepted way of proving that you are truly financially sound is ownership of Costa Rica real estate. For instance, the many Costa Rica villas for sale or Condos for sale in Jaco, Costa Rica are a good example. There are other ways of course but this is a huge plus.
