The city of Jaco Costa Rica won the Blue Flag designation for one more year. The program test the waters throughout the year to determine who is eligible to win the Blue Flag status. Jaco Costa Rica in the past has been hit by "aguas negras" which is basically polluted untreated sewage waste that were flowing into the beach via the 5 rivers that flow into Jaco. After the "aguas negras" report hit the newspapers two years ago, Jaco was embarrased and collectively decided with all the local businesses to improve the quality of the waters in and around Jaco Costa Rica. Since that time, Jaco Beach Costa Rica has been a Blue Flag beach after each testing of the waters.
The National Commission of Ecological Blue Flag Program congratulated Sonia Alvarado of Blue Flag Committee of Garabito for the great work she has done and thanks to the community which obtained the Blue Flag with a score of 98.
