Fishing is one of the many things that Costa Rica is known for and there is no better place on earth for catching billfish than off the shores of Costa Rica. For those who aren’t familiar, billfish is a name that refers to a variety of large fish with spear-like jaws that live near the water’s surface and are hunted for sport like Marlin and sailfish. The Los Suenos Billfish Tourney is a yearly 4-day event that draws sport fishermen from all over the world. This year was the 6th annual event and over 40 boats competed for over close to $300,000 in prize money.
This tournament is a little different than those in days of old, because sport fishermen are becoming more concerned about conservation and most of the fish that are caught are released—unless they plan to eat them, of course. This year the contestants were even encouraged to take "release photos" instead of the traditional hanging photos to minimize the stress on the fish and to prevent killing them accidentally.
As for the results, a team from the boat known as The Clean Sweep lived up to their name and won the tournament with a total of 31 sailfish and 4 Marlin caught. That netted them 50% of the prize money purse. Coming in at a cool second place and nabbing 30% of the prize purse was the Super Fly team with 24 sailfish and 3 Marlin and the Dealers choice came in third to win 20% of the purse prize money with 7 sailfish and 1 Marlin to their credit.
There is a second leg of the tournament that is set to take place February 25th through the 28th and the competition should be very fierce. Will The Clean Sweep take the top prize again or will the other teams discover their secret and nab the top prize for themselves. Stay tuned to find out!
