As I ate dinner in one of my favorite restaurants "I love Sushi" in Costa Rica last night, I paused to remember my first visit here just over three years ago. You see, I first came to Costa Rica for a vacation and one night at dinner I met the owner of this restaurant. He had one of those gregarious personalities and you just couldn't help but be drawn into a conversation with the guy. Well, he starts telling me how he wakes up and surfs every morning and plays golf every afternoon at 3:00 pm. My first thought was to wonder how this guy could run a successful business and still have so much time to do the things he loves. But, then I realized that since it gets dark in Costa Rica between 5:30 and 6:00 pm every evening he would have to play 18 holes of golf in less than 3 hours. Being an avid golfer myself this was something I was going to have to see to believe.
So, the next day I met up with this fellow and we played one of the most enjoyable games of golf I had ever played. I mean, here we were at a spectacular golf course set off next to natural rain forest with a view of the ocean, playing golf. As we walked down the 17th and 18th hole, I got the perfect view of the sunset overlooking the Marina and I knew it was time to make a change in my life. I began to question how this surfer/golfer/restaurateur was able to live his dream life, a life that I would love to live. After some serious soul searching I knew the answer; he lived this life simply because he chose to. We all make choices that create the lives we lead. We choose where to live, what to eat and what we will do for fun. Learning to embrace change is the first step. Once you truly understand that you create the environment you exist in, you gain a lot of power. I am so thankful that I learned this valuable lesson that day so that I am able to live the life I live now. Maybe it's time you asked yourself what your dream life would look like and then simply choose to live it.
