Located in the Costa Rican North Pacific region, the Africa Mia zoo made headlines this weekend by announcing the birth of the first giraffe in the country and Central America as well.
The park is named after the movie Out of Africa (Africa Mia in Spanish) and as it name implies the park resembles the African plains and exhibits animals from the African and Asian continent. Species such as zebras, ostriches, giraffes, dromedaries, bongos, elands and much more were brought to Liberia, Guanacaste.
The owners were careful in bringing only herbivorous species in order to create a stress free environment. So far, the species have responded wonderfully and have been reproducing in a healthy manner.
The zoo’s veterinarian, Tania Pivovarova stated that all species are in optimal conditions and count with the ideal environment and space to live in. Aside from the historic birth of "Roxi", the first giraffe born in Central America, Africa Mia has witnessed the birth of over 20 zebras and 6 ostriches in its 5 year run.
If Africa seems a bit too far and expensive to visit, a great alternative is to fly into the Daniel Oduber International Airport in Liberia and visit the Africa Mia zoo in this Costa Rican region.
